America Reads is a federally funded after school literacy tutoring program at WIU. America Reads is coordinated in the Department of School of Education out of the Reading Center in Horrabin Hall, Room 46. Most students enrolled in America Reads are in need of extra literacy support and are usually recommended by their teachers or parents.
What We Do
America Reads volunteer literacy tutors are undergraduate and graduate level WIU students who assist elementary aged children with reading in a comfortable after-school setting. Tutors currently work at Lincoln Elementary school from 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm and St. Paul Elementary school from 2:30 pm - 3:15 pm. Duties may include individual and small group tutoring on specific skills, reading books with a student, or helping students read to understand their homework assignments.
